KANSAS THESPIAN FILMWORKS 2019
Kansas Thespian Filmworks is a weeklong film challenge designed for high school students in KS. Students will have a week to plan, write, shoot, edit, and digitally submit a film for consideration. The kickoff date will be November 2nd at 7:30 am. All films need to be submitted by November 11 by 11:59 pm. All films submitted that follow the guidelines will be eligible to be featured in the public screening on at the Kansas Thespian Festival in January 2020.
GETTING STARTED
Register: Registration Deadline is Tuesday, October 15 (you receive an invoice within 48 hours of registration)
Payment: Payment of $25 per film/creative team must be received by Friday, October 25th . This is non-refundable.
Kick Off Date: Friday, November 1 at 7:30 AM
Each team will receive an email at this time containing five (5) possible genres to choose from, a prop/object to include in the film, and a line of dialogue to include.
Submission Date: Sunday, November 10 no later than 11:59 PM
Any film not submitted by November 10 will not be considered.

Who is Eligible to Participate?
- High School Students (Grades 9-12) in KS
- Schools must have an active Thespian Troupe (ITS)
- Adults (18+ and no longer in high school) may participate as actors. They may also participate in minor technical capacities, but may NOT participate in a major role (such as, but not limited to, directing, cinematographer, editing, sound design, and music composition), or hold a position as part of the creative team.
- Up to four (4) students can be a part of the Creative Team per film submitted
- Up to five (5) films can be submitted per school
- There is no limit to how many students can be a part of the film with regards to acting or other technical help. Only FOUR (4) can be listed as part of the Creative Team or Team Leaders.
- No longer than FIVE (5) minutes in length.
- The storyline must conclude itself inside this 5 minute time limit.
- Any film passing the 5 minute limit will be not be considered.
- ONE (1) additional minute for End Credits
- The film MUST have credits
- Any credits at the beginning of the film will count toward the 5 minute time limit for the body of the film
- Once the end credits begin to roll, any additional footage during/after the credits, such as an end or post credit scene, cannot last longer than the allotted 1 minute for credits, no matter how short the original film was. If your film is 4 minutes, you do NOT get an extra minute toward credits. The reverse is also true. If your credits are only 30 seconds long, you do NOT get to add 30 seconds to the body of the film.
- Max Resolution of 1080P.
- Frame Rate of 24P, 30P, 30i.
- Somewhere in the credits the following line must appear: “This film was made for Kansas Thespian Filmworks 2019.”
- Music used must either be in the public domain or original to the film.
- Music used must be credited.
- No copyrighted or trademarked materials (including, but not limited to, books, posters, company names and logos) without obtaining written permission. These materials need to be credited, and the authorized written permission will need to be made available to the Kansas Thespian Filmworks director.
- Failure to follow any of the above guidelines will result in disqualification and the film may not be screened.
- Films need to be uploaded to YouTube.
- Once uploaded to YouTube, you will need to submit the film via FilmFreeway.
- Students will need to create an account on FilmFreeway (www.filmfreeway.com) before they can upload the film. It is free.
- Once they have created an account, they will upload the film from YouTube to their account.
- They will then submit the film to Kansas Thespians Filmworks. This link will take you directly to the festival page: https://filmfreeway.com/Filmworks-KansasThespians
- We suggest whoever is submitting the film create an account with FilmFreeway ahead of time as the process of submitting a film can sometimes take a while.
- Failure to follow any of the above guidelines may result in disqualification and the film may not be screened.
OTHER RULES/REGULATIONS
- Film must contain all the prescribed elements sent out on October 26 (genre, prop/object, line of dialogue).
- The screenplay must be original to this program. You may NOT take from previously written screenplays.
- Film must not contain graphic content or language. No nudity is allowed. The film should follow the same conduct outlines allowed by your school. Troupe directors are responsible for making sure that the content of the films follows the guidelines of their schools.
- You must secure video consent forms for everyone who appears on camera.
- You must secure location release forms for every location you use in making the film.
- Release/Consent forms should be turned into the troupe director upon completion of the film. They are available on the Kansas Thespians website at http://www.kansasthespians.com/
- Stock footage may NOT be used. All footage must be original to the film.
- Payment and registration must be completed by the stated due date in order to participate.
- Failure to follow any of the above guidelines may result in disqualification and the film may not be screened.
- Films will be judged using the National Individual Event Adjudication form for Film.
PRIZES/AWARDS
- Awards will be given for the top three films.
- The creative team leaders (up to four people) behind the best overall film(s) will receive:
- Special Screening at Kansas Thespian Festival
- Superior in Film Individual Event at state level
- Your film will be adjudicated at the International Thespian Festival in June of 2020 in Bloomington, Indiana (contingent upon attending the festival).
- Additional films may be selected to screen at the Kansas Thespian Festival
- All prizes will be awarded at the Kansas Thespian Festival in January 2020
